Sir Gawain and Dame Ragnelle


In a folk story written down around 1450, a lesser known tale of the Knights of the Round Table, King Arthur is out hunting one afternoon near a forest that does not belong to him. The king is accosted by a powerful man who introduces himself as Sir Gromer. He claims that Arthur is trespassing and raises his sword to attack, but then notices that the king is unarmed. And so, he shows mercy. Sir Gromer gives King Arthur one year to return to the same spot with the answer to a single question, “What do women desire above all else?” If the answer is correct, the king’s life will be spared. If it is wrong, the king will lose his head.
